i Holy Cannoli !

ree

Crunchy. Creamy. Damn Delicious. The Cannoli.

A luscious, Italian - Sicilian, treat consisting of a crispy fried pastry dough shell filled with a creamy sweet cheese filling & just a dusting of powdered sugar.

Mmmm, I can never get enough!

As far as I can remember, Cannoli is, and always will be, a sought after treat in my family. Fighting over the last one was something that my siblings, cousins, and I did frequently at family gatherings. Even now, during our annual Italian family reunion, the giant cannoli shell filled with countless different cannoli and the giant extra container of filling is the main attraction on the dessert table. There is usually nothing but crumbs!

There are so many different variations to choose from; chocolate dipped, chocolate chip filled, candies, fruits, or, the classic pistachio. Classic is as classic does though, and I just don’t like messing around with an original.

Don’t Mess with the Best

When I choose my Special Flavors of the month, I try to pick something classic, and something fun. In August, the ‘Holy Cannoli’ took the spotlight as a nod to my Italian family & our annual reunion. Sadly, due to the current circumstances of the pandemic, our family was unable to gather this year. Without getting to see my family, devour homemade ravioli and gravy, and fight over cannoli’s, what was a girl to do?!

Topping my original New York style cheesecake with that velvety ricotta filling & hand-chopped pistachios is “Semplicemente perfetto”! Of course, I had to try a chocolate chip too, just for good measure.

To pull this off, when it came down to the most important part (the filling) I had played around with different recipes until I found that I just needed to make it my own!

With the basic ingredients in tow; ricotta, cream cheese, and powdered sugar; I spiced it up a bit to create a wonderfully light and fluffy filling that I can’t get enough of! What nutty little spice did I add, you ask? Nutmeg! This warm, yet sweet spice added just the flair I was looking for to make these cakes, something to write Nonna about ;)

Top it. Dip It. Fill It

It’s Up To You!

Have you ever attempted to make cannoli filling before? For a treat so devilishly delicious, it would seem difficult, right? Well, it’s not!

So grab your stand mixers, or your hand mixers & let's whip it up! After you make yourself this awesome cannoli dip, you can top any dessert or cake (maybe try to make a tiramisu?!), Dip in graham crackers or fried pastries, or buy or make your own cannoli shells! The options will be endless.

What You will Need:

  • 1 8 oz Brick of your favorite Cream Cheese

  • 1 cup of Ricotta Cheese (I use Whole Milk Italian Style Ricotta from Meijer)

  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar

  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract

  • ¼ tsp Nutmeg (or to taste)
